The Questions
a. Describe the setting, using specific details from the story in your answer.
It started as a clear sunny day with the warmth that had been taken from the sun's bright rays. The people of the village began to gather in the square, the post office and the bank around ten o'clock. The wind started picking up causing movement in the air.
b. Explain the feelings of most people in town towards the lottery...
In my opinion, they were nervous and not looking forward to the lottery well the adults in the town where they know about it and what it's all about. The children are probably just acting like children not really processing or realizing what is going to happen.
c. What evidence is there that the lottery has been going on for a long time?
There is an old man who goes by the name of Old Man Warner who says in the text somewhere "Seventy-seventh year I been in the lottery." Also, a keynote is that Old Man Warner is the oldest man in the town and the box is way older than him.
d. What is Old Man Warner's attitude about those who would like to change things?
He doesn't really like that idea, he exclaims that people who would like to change it are fools.
e. Explain how the lottery works...
Every single year the people in the town all gather up in one spot (my question is how will they do that when the coronavirus is around?) Anyways children are first, then fathers, and lastly mothers. The children all go out and collect stones for which they will throw at the family who gets the black mark which is contained in a box filled with black pieces of paper yet only one has a black circle on it which was drawn on by coal. Basically, the family who picks out the black circle piece of paper goes to the front where they get greeted with stones. So this whole process takes about two whole hours to do.
f. In what way is the title, "The Lottery", misleading? Why would the author want to trick the reader by having a misleading title?
I think it has something to do with making the story seem like some lucky family from the town will win a lot of money. Another thing is they probably wanted to pull the reader in and with a title as "The Lottery" people are going to read it to think that it's about money winning where really the whole story has a twist which brings the reader more interested into the story.
g. Why do you think this is a dystopian story?
Honestly, I think all a dystopian story is feelings that are being hidden away by a mask. I think this because people in the story think it's alright for innocent people to get hit by stones each year. So, therefore, it has to be dystopian because like the definition people suffer from this event.
h. Does it remind you of any others?
This sort of reminds me of Robocop because he got shot and got transformed into a robot. This wasn't fine because he still would have been hurt emotionally from all his memories as a human, and honestly, I don't think it was fair to keep him alive as a robot (as cool as it is.)
i. How do I know what I've learnt?
I know what I have learnt because now when I watch a film or something I can know exactly if it is a Dystopian film.
j. Can I explain what I've learned to someone else?
Yes, I can because I literally just went out and told my dad about what I have been working on.
k. Can I apply what I've known when creating my work?
Yes because I can relate to it through what images I use and what words I choose to use to get my point across of my understanding.
