Spirituals are not rituals they are songs that slaves sung back in the early days of our earth. They are basically singing their hearts out or either their emotions. Some of them can be calm, sad or even horrible. I think they were important to the slaves because it provided hope for them and everyone could sing along due to being in the same boat.
A Song;
I think the meaning of this song is that they are tired and just want to lay down at home and sleep the rest of the day/night away. I think it also meant it would keep them busy and working because listening to songs helps me clean/work so it would work for them too.
